JOB: LOCUM ENT CONSULTANT SURGEON WITH SPECIALIST INTEREST IN OTOLOGY

CPL Healthcare UK are assisting a London based Trust who are looking for a Locum Consultant ENT Surgeon with a subspecialty interest in Otology and Balance. This is a 12-month fixed-term post, developed in response to current service needs within their well-regarded ENT department. While initially offered on a fixed-term basis, there is funding in place and a possibility that the post may progress to a substantive position, subject to future Trust approval.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a progressive, supportive, and innovative ENT department within a Trust rated ‘Outstanding’ for care by the CQC. The successful applicant will work in a primarily elective setting at Homerton Hospital, contributing to the general ENT service while developing and delivering specialist otology care. Dedicated theatre time and appropriate support will be provided, with flexibility to pursue subspecialty interests such as endoscopic ear surgery or collaborating with lateral skull base team at a nearby site. There is also the opportunity to participate in paediatric ENT clinics and operating lists, depending on preference.

The department is widely recognised for its commitment to service improvement, technological innovation, and patient-centred care. Recent initiatives—such as Teleotology, follow-up reduction programmes, and integrated working with primary care and the NEL Community ENT — demonstrate our focus on transformation and excellence. We are looking for a colleague who will actively contribute to this culture of innovation and quality improvement.

Elective surgical activity is based in our well-equipped Day Surgery Unit (DSU), where the successful candidate will have a three-session weekday operating list. From October 2025, ENT operating will also take place in our brand-new Elective Surgical Centre, which will feature two additional theatres and enhanced capacity. This post will include a weekday list in the new centre, and additional Saturday waiting list initiative (WLI) sessions, subject to demand.

Outpatient services—including adult and paediatric clinics—are delivered on-site. The department has embraced digital care pathways and virtual consultations, and we welcome candidates with the skills and enthusiasm for virtual consultations and the necessary excellent communication skills and time management required for this.

The post includes participation in the consultant-led on-call rota, which currently operates on a 1:5 basis during weekday working hours. Although the Trust does not currently offer an in-house out-of-hours ENT rota, the introduction of a 1:8 out-of-hours on-call arrangement is under consideration, and consultants will be expected to participate should this be implemented. A broad and safe emergency ENT skill set is essential. Although emergency surgery there is infrequent, it may occasionally be required when transfer to a neighbouring centre is not feasible. Consultants are also expected to provide overnight cover following paediatric ENT operating, specifically for primary haemorrhage or other post-operative complications.

DUTIES OF THE POST:

The provisional job plan is equivalent to 10 programmed activities (PAs) and is detailed in the accompanying schedule. This will be subject to review as part of the annual job planning process, to be undertaken within 12 months of appointment.

8 PAs – outpatients and theatres (adult +/- paeds mix dependent on consultant)

1 PA – Clinical admin (DCC)

1 PA – CPD / Governance; audit, M&M meeting, MDM / network representation, training, research

We are keen to attract candidates with an interest in clinical leadership, education, and service development. Experience in areas such as rota management, theatre utilisation, and pathway redesign would be advantageous. The role includes responsibility for training junior doctors and allied health professionals, and there are opportunities to lead on audit, quality improvement, and teaching junior staff and allied health professionals, as well as contributing to the department teaching, audit and research programmes.
